The scale of the shift is already visible
In its results for the quarter ending June 2026, Microsoft disclosed roughly 40 million AI agents registered in its enterprise agent platform against about 30 million paid human seats of its Copilot assistant (Microsoft FY26 Q4 disclosure, late July 2026, reported by Forbes, July 31, 2026). Registered is not the same as working, and nobody has audited what those agents do. The difference, in plain terms
An assistant is reactive and single-turn. You ask, it responds, the loop ends with you. A copilot that drafts an email when you click a button is an assistant, however good the draft. An agent is proactive and multi-step. It runs a loop: it observes the current state, decides what to do, acts, checks the result, and continues, pursuing a goal across time without a prompt for each step. The test is simple. If it waits for you, it is an assistant. If it would do something tonight while you sleep, it is an agent.
Why it matters for pipeline
The two solve different problems. An assistant compresses the time a human spends on a task: faster research, quicker drafts, a summarized call. Real value, bounded by the human's hours. An agent removes the task from the human's plate: it watches every account continuously, catches the deal going quiet at 2am, holds spend on the account that stopped converting, and surfaces the work already done. Assistants make a team faster. Agents change what the team spends its time on. A revenue org that only adopts assistants gets a productivity bump; one that adopts governed agents changes its coverage.
The catch assistants do not have
Because an agent acts, it carries risk an assistant does not. An assistant's bad suggestion dies when the human ignores it. An agent's bad action reaches a customer or the CRM.
